water_cutting_measuresA plan for mandatory measures to curb water usage in Temecula and Murrieta will be discussed Tuesday by the Rancho California Water District Board of Directors. The board will consider adopting Stage 3 of the Water Shortage Contingency Plan, which would open the door to penalizing customers who do not meet conservation and efficiency targets. The district currently has a voluntary water conservation policy in place. According to a staff report, remaining at the voluntary stage is not recommended as water precipitation and snowpack melts remain below normal levels.

Under Stage 3, which has a reduction target of 10 to 20 percent, household customers would have to water and irrigate lawns and landscaping between midnight and 6 a.m., and no more than every other day. Residents at addresses with odd-numbered last digits would only be able to water on odd-numbered days of the month, while residents with addresses ending in even digits would be allowed to water on even days.

No replacement water would be allowed for residential ponds or lakes, and decorative fountains would have to be turned off and emptied in order to keep insects away. Sprinkler oversprays onto sidewalks and driveways, already discouraged on a voluntary basis, would be prohibited under Stage 3 measures, as would be using a hose to clean driveways, sidewalks or other hardscapes. Unspecified penalties for non-compliance would be imposed.

keeping-bees_at-bayWe all know that bees collect pollen for food. But they also need water, and are not picky about where they forage for it. Bodies of water tend to attract bees. This applies to just about every common water source, including several found around the home.

Here are a few tips that can help solve a bee nuisance around different household water locations, and discourage bees from returning;

-Swimming pool: Mix a 1/4 cub of dish soap to a quart of water. Fill an empty sprayer bottle with it and spray the soapy mixture at any bees near a swimming pool. The soapy mixture kills the bees quickly and without harmful pesticide residues.

-Coolers: Evaporative coolers after use.

-Birdbaths: Mix 2 tablespoons of vinegar per gallon of water to birdbaths. Same goes for dog water dishes and other forms of pet waterers.

-Outdoor faucets: Repair leaky garden faucets and faulty irrigation systems.

Ward Off Prostate Cancer

prostate_cancerA drug already sold for other prostate problems significantly cut the chances of prostate cancer being found in men with an increased risk of the disease, doctors reported Monday. In a large international study, dutasteride, sold as Avodart, lowered the chances of a prostate cancer diagnosis by 23 percent after four years of use. Tens of thousands of men each year face a problem like those in the study: worrisome results from prostate cancer screening tests and biopsies that come back negative. “There’s no question” that many had small tumors that were not detected, yet the drug still lowered the risk of cancer being found years later, said Dr. Gerald Andriole of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

He led the study in the United States and reported results Monday at an American Urological Association conference in Chicago. The study was sponsored by Avodart’s maker, British-based GlaxoSmithKline PLC. Dutasteride now joins finasteride, sold as Merck & Co. Inc.’s Proscar and in generic form, as a potential prostate cancer prevention drug. The new study involved 8,200 men ages 50 to 75 with high PSA blood test scores but no sign of cancer on biopsy. They were given dutasteride or dummy pills and new biopsies two and four years later. After two years, prostate cancer was found in 17 percent of men on dummy pills and 13 percent of those on the drug. After four years, it was found in another 12 percent of men on the placebo and 9 percent on dutasteride.
