A cancerous disease of the lungs that results from exposure to asbestos is called Mesothelioma. A disease which is difficult to treat effectively because it can remain dormant for as long as fifty years before becoming active. And the survival times are a year to fifteen months with radiation treatment. The disease is cancer of the mesothelium, the two-layered membrane that covers many of the internal organs which hold a lubricating fluid between them.
And towards it, this fluid allows organs such as the heart and lungs to move freely and protects them from other structures within the body. The mesothelium is referred to by various names, depending on where it is located in the body. It is called the pleura when it surrounds the lungs and the peritoneum when it covers the organs of the abdomen. It is in these two areas where most cases said disease begins.
In a nutshell, research has shown that Mesothelioma treatment which is a series of three vaccinations administered intradermally and intravenously over a two weeks period after chemotherapy, offers the best chance at long-term survival for patients who are eligible for it. The results were eighty percent effective in the test group. The earlier a person received the treatment the greater their chances were to be free of the disease.
