Get Moving: Cancer Survivors Urged To Exercise

New guidelines are urging survivors to exercise more, even — hard as it may sound — those who haven’t yet finished their treatment.

There’s growing evidence that physical activity improves quality of life and eases some cancer-related fatigue. More, it can help fend off a serious decline in physical function that can last long after therapy is finished.

Consider: In one year, women who needed chemotherapy for their breast cancer can see a swapping of muscle for fat that’s equivalent to 10 years of normal aging, says Dr. Wendy Demark-Wahnefried of the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

In other words, a 45-year-old may find herself with the fatter, weaker body type of a 55-year-old.

Scientists have long advised that being overweight and sedentary increases the risk for various cancers. Among the nation’s nearly 12 million cancer survivors, there are hints — although not yet proof — that people who are more active may lower risk of a recurrence. And like everyone who ages, the longer cancer survivors live, the higher their risk for heart disease that exercise definitely fights. [Read more...]

Tips To Take Care Of Your Heels

Opt for footwear with broader heel base, instead of wearing stilettos that cause foot problems, knee trouble and back pain.

There’s no doubt about what a sexy pair of stilettos can do to up your sex quotient. On a well-toned pair of legs, they can be the ultimate seductive weapon. Not surprisingly, women spend hours, not to forget money on acquiring the perfect pair. For the fashionably forward, high heels are more than just footwear — they are a fashion statement. However, winning those appreciative glances from men and envious looks from women, doesn’t come without a price. Unfortunately women are willing to pay it even if it costs them their health.

Health experts across the globe would vouch for the ill-effects of the killer stiletto heels. And unless you are a Kareena Kapoor or a Deepika Padukone — who often sport them only for brief public appearances — chances are that in the long run you may actually end up not only with severe foot problems, but also knee and back problems. High heels also squeeze and squash your toes, leading to in-grown toenails, blisters and and cause foot infections. And it’s wise to avoid navigating crowds in supermarkets or dropping kids off to school in those killer heels, unless you are in the league of a Victoria Beckham. Incidentally, even the noted celebrity was not immune to the footsie problems and it was reported that she underwent a painful surgery to treat her bunions. [Read more...]

Climate Change Likely To Complicate Plant Diseases Of The Future

Climate change is expected to create yet another problem – complications in plant diseases of the future.

University of Illinois researchers are studying the impact of elevated carbon dioxide, elevated ozone and higher atmospheric temperatures on plant diseases that could challenge crops in these changing conditions.

“Plants growing in a high carbon dioxide environment tend to grow faster and larger, and they have denser canopies,” said Darin Eastburn, U of I associate professor of crop sciences.

“These dense plant canopies favour the development of some diseases because the low light levels and reduced air circulation allow higher relative humidity levels to develop, and this promotes the growth and sporulation of many plant pathogens.”

At the same time, plants grown in high carbon dioxide environments also close their stomata, pores in the leaves that allow the plant to take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen, more often. [Read more...]

Pigeons Being Captured In Abu Dhabi, Residents Say

In a quiet Abu Dhabi neighbourhood around Khalifa Street, pigeons are lured by feed scattered on the pavement. In the hot afternoon sun, the food is a welcome sight for them and they fly down in droves. But they are unaware of the four men lurking around, waiting to ensnare them in nets and take them away in cages.

These men allegedly lay a net for the birds, and wait for a number of them to collect in the area. They then capture these birds with the net, put them in cages after freeing them and drive away in a white van.

Madhu Malini, 30, a resident in the area, said she had seen this happening twice, and was concerned about what was happening to the birds.

“I love animals and I was upset at the birds being taken away in this manner. These men hurt the pigeons, especially as many of their bodies get ensnared in the net and their wings break. They should be stopped, especially if they are not licensed by the government,” Malini said. [Read more...]

Russia Launches Second Stealth Warship For India

Russia launched the second of three stealth frigates for the Indian Navy under USD 1.6 billion deal inked in July 2006.

The launching ceremony of the missile frigate Tarkash (Quiver) in Russia’s Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad, was attended by senior Russian and Indian naval officials, state-owned Yantar shipyard said in a release.

The first of three Project 11356 (modified Krivak III) frigates, named the Teg (Sword), was launched in last November.

The third frigate, Trikand (Bow) is due to be delivered in 2011-12.

The new frigates, also known as Talwar class, will be armed with eight BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.

They will be also equipped with a 100-mm gun, a Shtil surface-to-air missile system, two Kashtan air-defence gun/missile systems, two twin 533-mm torpedo launchers, and an antisubmarine warfare (ASW) helicopter.

Earlier, Russia’s Baltiisky Zavod shipyard had built three stealth frigates of the same class – INS Talwar, INS Trishul and INS Tabar.

Continuing the tradition of the Indian Navy to name naval ships of the same class with same letter in the beginning, President Pratibha Patil during her Russia visit last September had christened the new frigates as the Teg, the Tarkash and the Trikand at various stages of completion at Yantar Shipyard.
