Cancer Patients To Get Faster Treatment

Cancer patients will get faster treatment with the help of an extra $4 million, Health Minister Tony Ryall says.=

The money would go towards new high-tech software to deliver a higher quality, faster treatment as well as improving patient management systems and speeding up the commissioning of a new linear accelerator.

Liner accelerators allow doctors to take images of people to spot cancer and its growth. The new machine will be for Palmerston North.

The $4m is reprioritised from underspends in the health sector last year. The annual health budget is $14 billion. NZ Herald

Eating Right And Managing Your Cholesterol Level

Filipino cuisine, which reflects our multicultural heritage, is an amalgamation of tastes, flavors, and cultural influences of Malay, Spanish, Chinese, and American origins. A number of the Filipino favorites are rich in flavors, such as nilagang baka, pork blood stew (dinuguan), duck’s egg (balut), Cordillera chicken dish (pinikpikan), papaitan (intestines cooked in bile), sisig, and fried pork and chicken skin (chicharon). These much loved and often requested dishes are undeniably delicious but are also rich in cholesterol.

For people with low risk for heart disease, the American Heart Association recommends less than 300mg of cholesterol per day through food. For those at risk, on the other hand, it recommends less than 200mg per day through food. For instance, for every 100 grams of beef, there is 3100mg of cholesterol. So imagine the cholesterol you take if you over indulge in foods like kalderatang baka (beef stew) or bulalo (beef bone marrow)! [Read more...]

Mixed Emotions

There are mixed emotions I felt upon arrival at the airport one Sunday morning. I am expecting that friends and only close relatives of mine were the ones who’ll possibly be around. But, how elated really I am, since my expectation turns out different as almost all of my known friends were present aside from a considerable number of immediate family members. From thereon, sharing of pleasantries started while exiting on our way towards a waiting vehicle. Thereafter, I noticed that a middle-aged woman who seemed familiar but could not exactly recall her affiliations with us came nearer, and curious enough I politely inquired as to her connections with the family. Only to be amazed upon recognizing later on, as it turns out that she was the elder sister of my better half. Well, she explained briefly that such was a result of the anti aging products which I sent her few months ago.

Scientists have discovered why women who smoke have a higher risk of developing ectopic pregnancies.

Ectopic pregnancies occur when the fertilised egg becomes implanted outside the womb, usually in the fallopian tubes.

There are around 30,000 cases in the UK each year but female smokers have quadruple the risk of developing this condition. [Read more...]

Skin Cancer Cases On The Rise

Diagnosed cases of skin cancer are on the rise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

By some estimates, 3 of 10 Caucasians will have at least one skin cancer in their lifetimes. According to the CDC, skin cancer is now the most common form of cancer in America.

“Some people predict there will be up to 3 million diagnoses of basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell in the country this year,” said Dr. Dane Christensen of Park Nicollet Clinic in Minneapolis.

Is it important to note that neither basal nor squamous cell carcinomas if left untreated progress to melanoma, the deadliest and more potentially fatal form of skin cancer. In 2006, the CDC reported that 53,919 people were diagnosed with melanomas of the skin and 8,441 people died from it. [Read more...]
