Mayweather Cannot Train With Rib-Cartilage Injury

mayweather_Floyd Mayweather Jr. has damaged cartilage in his ribs and will stop training for his comeback fight until a doctor says he can resume. Richard Schaefer, chief executive of Golden Boy Promotions, told The Associated Press on Monday that Mayweather has been in tremendous pain since suffering the injury during training on Thursday. “He tried to work through it. He really did not want to postpone the fight, but it came to the point where he could barely sit,” Schaefer said. “He could not train, he could not move and there was really not much of a choice.”

Mayweather(39-0, 25 KOs) was scheduled to fight Juan Manuel Marquez (50-4-1, 37 KOs) on July 18 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Schaefer said both fighters have committed to rescheduling and a September date has been mentioned. But promoters and the fighters won’t agree to a date without the OK of doctors.

Mayweather’s ribs are not broken, and the former five-division champ plans to see a doctor this week, Schaefer said. He said he did not know exactly how Mayweather damaged his cartilage. “Right now he cannot go and train, he cannot work out, he cannot run, he cannot hit the heavy bag and the speed bags and jump ropes and all these kinds of things,” Schaefer said. “He definitely will need some additional training but again, Floyd is such an amazing athlete– and really on top of his game — that I think it will be relatively easy for him to get right back into it.”

Cartilage connects the ribs to the sternum, and can tear away after direct blows to the chest, other trauma or particularly violent coughs and sneezes. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo injured his rib cartilage during the team’s season ending game at Philadelphia last year, a disastrous 44-6 loss in which Romo fumbled, was sacked and benched. Coach Wade Phillips said a flare-up of the pain caused Romo to collapse in the shower afterward.

Mayweather and Marquez were scheduled to fight at a catch-weight of about 143 pounds, eight more than Marquez has ever fought and the lightest weight for Mayweather since 2005. Mayweather hasn’t boxed since knocking out Ricky Hatton in December 2007. He was slated to fight a rematch with Oscar De La Hoya but instead abruptly retired last June, while still considered the sport’s pound-for-pound king.

Now, many believe Manny Pacquiao holds that title after he beat De La Hoya and Hatton in fewer rounds than Mayweather. It’s possible that Mayweather and Pacquiao will eventually meet in the ring if Mayweather beats Marquez first.

But promoter Bob Arum also wants to set up a Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto fight in November, the earliest Cotto can get back into the ring after the welterweight’s win over Joshua Clottey on Saturday. Cotto won by decision but left Madison Square Garden in New York with a big gash over his left eye that required six stitches.

Serena Outclassed Groth

serena_williamsSamantha Stosur is the sole Australian woman left in the women’s singles draw at Wimbledon after Jarmila Groth was unceremoniously bundled out by Serena Williams. The two-time Wimbledon champion made quick work of her 6-2 6-1 win, seeing off the Slovakian-born Groth in just 58 minutes. Groth was easily outclassed by Williams, struggling with returning the American’s powerful serve and notching up 10 double faults. “I did try, but didn’t play as I did the first round, not even close,” Groth said. “There were a couple of games and points that it looked like it may sort of start doing something. “I thought it wasn’t as bad until my serve just went completely berserk and decided to go every time long. “But she’s a great player so she didn’t really let me get into it. “She took all the chances she got, the ones I gave her, and yeah, I got beaten.”

Williams broke Groth twice in the first set as the Australian made six double faults. The Victorian appeared frustrated in the second set, mis-firing several returns into the net and over the baseline as Williams raced to a 4-0 lead. Groth enjoyed a brief reprise in the fifth game when she managed to break Williams. But Williams immediately broke back after Groth unsuccessfully challenged a return ruled just out over the baseline. With three match points in hand, Williams finished off the match when Groth hit a forehand return into the net.

Williams, who is one of the favourites for the tournament, paid tribute to Groth. “She hit the ball so hard so I had to come back and be ready for a really good match,” Williams said. “I was just focusing on what I was doing and doing the best I could against such a hard hitter. “I thought I played really well. I knew she was going to be tough so I knew I had to be ready for the match.” Groth’s departure from the All England Club leaves only Stosur in the women’s draw and compatriot Lleyton Hewitt in the men’s. Both are due to play their second round matches on Thursday night (EST). Stosur, who reached the semi-finals of the French Open, faces German qualifier Tatjana Malek, who cut down Australian Jelena Dokic in the first round, while Hewitt goes up against world No.5 seed Juan Martin del Potro.

Water Illnesses In Public Swimming Pools

urine_fecal_matterWarm weather has finally arrived in Michigan and many families will enjoy water sports at public swimming pools or relaxation in hot tubs and whirlpools. But people who go into public pools and whirlpools should be aware of the illnesses they can get from bacteria in the water, mostly from human bodily fluids. Everyone who uses public pools can make them safer for themselves and other users by showering prior to entering pools to wash away fecal matter, not using pools while sick with a cold or diarrhea, and not urinating in pools.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises everyone to be aware of recreational water illnesses (RWIs), and to follow certain rules for water safety. Chlorine takes time to kill germs in pools, so contaminants can affect the health of pool users. Germs can be spread in and around pools.

· A. The most common RWI is diarrheal illness caused by E. coli O157:H7 and the cryptosporidium (crypto) parasite that occurs in infected stools. Crypto can resist chlorine and live in pools for days, which is people should not swim when they have diarrhea. Invisible amounts of fecal matter can spread germs in water and make others sick if even a little contaminated water is swallowed.

· B. Avoid getting water in your mouth and don’t swallow pool water.

· C. Practice good hygiene by showering with soap before entering a pool, to clean away germs, especially any fecal matter on the rear end. Adults should also shower or wash children thoroughly, (especially fecal matter on the rear end).

· D. Don’t urinate in a pool. Go to a bathroom and wash your hands after using a toilet. Sweat and urine in water can combine with chlorine and irritate eyes and the respiratory system.

· E. Adults should take children for frequent bathroom breaks or check diapers often. Diapers should be changed in a bathroom or changing station, not at poolside. Adults should wash their hands after changing diapers and wash children’s hands after they use the bathroom.

· F. Beware of public pools with dirty or cloudy water with a strong chemical smell. Properly chlorinated pools have little odor, with clean and clear water, as well as functioning ventilation and filtration systems.

A recent study by the Water Quality and Health Council found that nearly 20 percent of adults surveyed have swum in public pools with a runny nose, an exposed rash or diarrhea. In a CNN study of 1,000 adults, 17 percent reported that they urinate in public pools.

The CDC reports that RWIs have been increasing for the past 20 years, and from 2005 to 2006, the agency reported 78 outbreaks of RWIs associated with swimming pools, water parks and hot tubs, as well as rivers, lakes and oceans that affected 4,412 people, causing 116 hospitalizations and five deaths.

In The Care Of Its Own Community

euan-fergason-in-assyntHaving wrested control of their land from its deer-stalking aristocratic owners, local people in the remote region of Assynt, in north-western Scotland, are pinning their hopes of long-term survival on attracting eco-tourists. Euan Ferguson reports There can be few better places to talk about wolves than here: standing on the col of Stac Pollaidh, one of the most characterful mountains on these islands, gazing out at the Summer Isles, the outer Hebrides, on one of those admittedly rare but nonetheless wonderful Scottish west coast days where the sky’s a hard delighted blue from dawn until the sun slips away somewhere close to 11 o’clock at night. Neil Birnie, who runs a tourism company called Wilderness Scotland, is attempting, remarkably successfully, to reassure me on the subject of wolves, about whose reintroduction there has been much recent debate. “There’s not one recorded instance of them killing a human,” he says. “They could run free here without any problem whatsoever, no danger at all. They’d kill the deer, fine, and help save the area: the deer, kept and bred by the big estates from Victorian times, have for decades got all the young trees just as they’re trying to grow – and the result is all those empty, empty hillsides you see. The wolves are indigenous, anyway, and would do a wonderful job. I think we have to accept that they’d need to be fenced, and sadly it would cost a fortune. People just wouldn’t be ready to bump into them, despite the facts. Personally I’d be delighted to run into one right now.”

This is one of many similarly fascinating conversations he grants me the privilege of enjoying, as we hike back for a late lochside lunch, and as my eco-education begins in something close to earnest. Previously, my only faintly greenish thought about nature came when I started, a few years ago after a trip to Tasmania, to try to remember to pick up my fag butts, in order to play my self-righteous bit. (This did lead to a disgusted shout of panic a week later when I pull two walking shirts from the washer to find twin heavy glops of wet nicotine misery in the top pockets.) But we are spending a couple of days in Assynt, the luckiest couple of sunny days this year, in one of the last truly wild places in the country, and there’s a hell of a lot to learn. Assynt, high on the west coast, nearing Cape Wrath, feels qualitatively different from much of the rest of Scotland. The mountains are not the highest: but they seem it. Partly because of the fascinating geological history – the area used to be part of Nova Scotia, or, as we decide, Nova Scotia used to be part of Assynt – there are few of the long rolling ranges you see around much of the Highlands. Instead you get distinct, separate peaks, shaped like sphinxes, like dogs, like giants: Pollaidh, of course, and the mighty Suilven, and Quinag, and Canisp; and below them some of the most gorgeous sea-lochs on the planet.
